    HISTORY

If we wanted to map the history of the flight around our mountains in more detail, our research would go as far as the stories about the flying monk Cyprian of the Red Monastery. In modern history, we find the first records of the "flying" of the Tatra sky from 1905. Specifically, on 23 June, the Polish hot air balloon Venus of Krakow flew with Polish aviators and traveled through the High Tatra Mountains at 2,500 meters.

After three and a half hours of flight, they landed happily on Belianske meadows (Spišská Belá). On 15 October of the same year, a French zeppelin with aviators on board, Rozan and Jacques Faure, flew from Paris, which after a day of flying landed near Jablonov (near Spišské Podhradie). From the complete beginning of local flying, it is worth mentioning the construction of a field airport in Važec in 1933, which served for sightseeing flights over the High Tatras by the dismantled military biplane.

The first recorded thoughts about establishing an airport behind Veľka Lomnica can be found in 1935. In connection with the construction of a new factory in Svit, the Czech industrialist Baťa is trying to create his own airport, which is also related to the first landing of a motor plane on the meadow behind the current railway station in Svit, in 1936. The plane was piloted by Major Ambruš and he brought the salaries for the employees of the company Baťa – Batizovce from Zlín. At the beginning of the Second World War, the current Poprad-Tatry airport began to be built as a reserve military airport. Subsequently, in 1939, the construction of an airport building and a double hangar began here.

The fact that the Tatra orography is suitable for the emergence of the wave flow flying began to be verified in 1948. The wave flow flying survey was carried out by airplanes on the C-106 aircraft. However, appropriate meteorological conditions have not always been met. The first flight in the history of waves flying in the Tatras was held in November 1953 by the pilots of Aeroklub Poprad M. Žiaran and A. Polorecký. The VT-109 Pionier glider reached an altitude of 3,500 meters. The most successful sailor in this "discipline" was Vladislav Zejda, who in 1961 reached an altitude of 10,500 meters on a specially modified glider L-13 Blaník. The motor aircraft leadership belongs to Radko Orlit, who on October 31, 1973 reached the Czechoslovak altitude record - 8,500 meters on the Z-526F.
